As the term suggests, footings are the foundational, or base, structures of a bridge that are built into the earth. They serve two main functions. First, they support the abutments—the structures connected to the span at each end of the bridge. Second, footings absorb the weight from the bridge span and transfer that weight and tension into the ground.
